Who Is a Jew – Part 3

The word “Jew” is a shortened version or a nick-name for Judean or Judahite.  The first time it is used in scripture can be found in 2Kings 16:5-6.  The northern ten tribes called Israel were allied with Syria and were in battle with Judah, the southern kingdom consisting of the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and a few Levites attending the temple.  The nation or house of Israel were conquered and deported by Assyria, between 745 through 721 BC, to an area of northeastern Syria and never returned to the land of Canaan.

When the Old Testament prophets speak of Israel, Ephraim, or Joseph they are referring to the northern ten tribes of Israel either as the actual kingdom prior to 745 BC or the nation as scattered (deported) after that date.  If the prophets are speaking of Judah then the name Judah will be used.

During the Babylonian captivity period many non-Judahite people, Persians or Persian subjects, converted to Judaism and were also called by the name “Jews”.

Esther 8:17 CLV  Also in every place of the different provinces and in each of the different cities to which the king's order and his edict were attaining, there was rejoicing and elation for the Jews, with feasting and a cheerful day. And many of the peoples of the country were professing themselves Jews, for awesome fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

Around 126 BC the Maccabean Hasmoneans conquered the Edomites and gave them the choice of either converting to Judaism or being exiled.  Because Esau and the Edomites always wanted the land of Canaan, conversion became the choice of favor.  Josephus, the Jewish historian, recorded this event in his Antiquities of the Jews.

“Hyrcanus took also Dora and Marissa, cities of Idumea, and subdued all the Idumeans; and permitted them to stay in that country, if they would be circumcised, and make use of the laws of the Jews; and they were so desirous of living in the country of their forefathers, that they submitted to the use of circumcision and the rest of the Jews’ ways of living; at which time therefore, this befell them, that they were hereafter no other than Jews.”

“The Edomites were conquered by John Hyrcanus who forcibly converted them to Judaism, and from then on they constituted a part of the Jewish people, Herod being one of their descendants. During Titus’ siege of Jerusalem, they marched in to reinforce the extreme elements, killing all they suspected of peace tendencies. Thereafter, they ceased to figure in Jewish history. The name in the Talmud is a synonym for an oppressive government, especially Rome; in the Middle Ages, it was applied to Christian Europe.”

The Edomites were a section of the radical Zealots whose actions and mannerisms caused the Roman army to destroy Jerusalem and the temple in 70 AD.  The Talmud began referring to Rome and Christian Europe as Edom to explain away the Old Testament prophecies concerning Edom as a last days enemy.  The Jews did not want to be credited as the nation destined to fulfill those prophecies so they spiritualized and applied them to other groups of people.  It has been said the terroristic Edomite spirit reclaimed its dominance through the violent Zionism of Vladimir Jabotinsky during the years of the formation of modern Israel during the 1940’s.  Non-violent Jews and British soldiers were murdered during this period to further the Zionist goals.

The terrorist organizations of Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir, as recorded in their own biographies, were simply updated forms of Zealot-Edomite terrorism during the 1040’s.

“Rabbi Amram Blau was imprisoned in Jerusalem, not by the Ottoman authorities, not by the British, and not by the Arabs, but by the Zionists.”

Yitzhak Shamir (i.e., Itzhak Yizernitsky) was responsible for the assassination of Lord Moyne on Nov. 6, 1944. Moyne was Britain’s Minister for Middle East Affairs.

Gerold Frank, The Deed, p. 35: “Explaining the nature of individual terrorism, Itzhak Yizernitsky, who as Shamir, the operations commander of the Stern group, planned the death of Moyne, once said: “A man who goes forth to take the life of another whom he does not know must believe one thing only— that by his act he will change the course of history.”  “Each made his way by different roads to the same conclusion: that Britain would not give up Palestine unless forced to; that freedom would be won only by fighting for it and that if it was to be won, Jewish zealots patterned after those who twenty centuries ago rose up against the might of Rome must now rise up against the might of Britain.”

The prophet, Obadiah, states that the Edomite nation will eventually be destroyed even though David Bay of Cutting Edge News believes and preaches it will be fulfilled when the current nation of Israel destroys the Palestinians. 

Obadiah 1:15-18 NET  "For the day of the LORD is approaching for all the nations! Just as you have done, so it will be done to you. You will get exactly what your deeds deserve.  (16)  For just as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink, and they will gulp down; they will be as though they had never been.  (17)  But on Mount Zion there will be a remnant of those who escape, and it will be a holy place once again. The descendants of Jacob will conquer those who had conquered them.  (18)  The descendants of Jacob will be a fire, and the descendants of Joseph a flame. The descendants of Esau will be like stubble. They will burn them up and devour them. There will not be a single survivor of the descendants of Esau!" Indeed, the LORD has spoken it.

However, it can be detected in the Obadiah passage above, the people delivering God’s judgment on the Edomites will be the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.  These descendants are people of the so-called lost ten tribes of Israel, and not the current nation of Israel which will be the ones destroyed.  Verse 17 of Obadiah exclaims that Mount Zion will once again become a Holy place when the Zionists have been eradicated.  Therefore, the modern day nation of Israel will fulfill the blessing that Isaac gave Jacob and those of the final destruction of Edom.

Various efforts have been made to claim that Turkey, China, Palestinians, or other nations or areas are actually modern Edom.  This may be an attempt to shift the focus from Zionist Israel to some other part of the world.

Regardless of the beliefs of certain Christians and other, the modern term “Jew” does not refer to a pure racial Abrahamic stock even of the tribe of Judah.  There are Edomite Jews, Persian converts, Ethiopian Jews, Ashkenazi Khazar converted Jews, Sephardim Jews, as well as black, Japanese, and Chinese Jews.  They are not a pure race from any stretch of the imagination.  Some believe they can become “chosen of God” by converting to Judaism.  To be chosen of God is to be a Christian.
