THE COW AS AN IDOL OF
WORSHIP
2-12-2019
Hey
diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle, the
cow jumped over the moon…..
Wikipedia: Cattle are considered sacred in world
religions such as Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, and others.
Cattle played other major roles in many religions, including those of ancient
Egypt, ancient Greece, ancient Israel, ancient Rome, and ancient Germany.
Exodus 32:4 NET He
accepted the gold from them, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a
molten calf. Then they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought
you up out of Egypt."
The
escape from Egypt, led by Moses, is considered a miraculous event. The Bible states that the Lord was leading
them by a cloud pillar during the day and by a pillar of fire during the night.
Exodus
13:21 NET Now the LORD was going before them by day in a pillar
of cloud to lead them in the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them
light, so that they could travel day or night.
They
arrived at the coast of the Red Sea with the Egyptian army quickly closing on
them. Thinking they were trapped and
soon to be slaughtered, God (the Lord) told Moses to stretch his hands outward
in the direction of the Red Sea and a strong east wind divided the water and
produced dry land.
Exodus
14:21 NET Moses stretched out his hand toward the sea, and the
LORD drove the sea apart by a strong east wind all that night, and he made the
sea into dry land, and the water was divided.
The
Israelites were then led into the desert to a place called Marah that only had
bitter water. Moses was told to throw a
certain tree into the pool of water and it became drinkable.
Exodus
15:25 NET He cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a
tree. When Moses threw it into the water, the water became safe to drink. There
the LORD made for them a binding ordinance, and there he tested them.
The people were next led to the Desert of Sin. They because hungry and began complaining
about being in the desert when they had plenty of food in Egypt. Although God was metaphorically becoming
impatient with their complaining, He sent them an abundance of quail and then a
substance known as Manna.
Exodus
16:13-14 NET In the evening the quail came up and covered the
camp, and in the morning a layer of dew was all around the camp. (14) When the
layer of dew had evaporated, there on the surface of the desert was a thin
flaky substance, thin like frost on the earth.
To shorten what seems to be
a prolonged Sunday School lesson, the following additional miracles will just be listed in the order
they occurred:
1) Moses
strikes a rock with his staff and water flows from it. This is prophetic of Jesus Christ, the rock,
from which healing waters flow.
2) Joshua
defeats the army of Amalek with Moses holding up his staff.
3) After
the occurrence of certain minor events, the people arrived at Mt. Sinai.
4) Moses
ascended the mountain and came into contact with the “Burning Bush”. He was verbally given the Ten Commandments
and various other laws, the Sabbath, and certain Festivals. The Ark of the Covenant was fashioned along
with the Tabernacle.
The Golden
Calf
Moses
made another trip up Mt. Sinai. He apparently
stayed longer than usual and the Israelites grew anxious that something may
have happened to him. According to
Exodus 32:1 they confronted Aaron and said, “make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us
up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him”.
Some
exegetes will say that the people had quickly forgotten that God brought them
out of Egypt. In my opinion, the people
had not forgotten, they merely wanted an idol or a replica of the God that led
them with pillars of smoke and fire. After
all the miraculous events prior to their arrival at Mt. Sinai, it would require
a severely mentally handicapped group of people to forget.
Yes,
they were delving into idolatry, but they wanted a replica of something that
had led them at this point and hopefully would continue to lead them in the
future.
But
why a cow (calf, bull)?
Another
exegete claims they must have seen a calf-god in Egypt. If they actually witnessed a calf idol then
they must have seen many other more important idol-type statues and drawings.
However,
the Israelites were slaves – working the fields and other forms of hard labor
while sleeping in mud huts. They did not
spend their Sunday afternoons browsing the Egyptian pantheons and palaces. Yes, encyclopedias claim that Egypt had a
cow-god(dess) but this cow-god did not appear until the Israelites created
their own version as well as other people groups around the world.
Worlds in Collision
Immanuel
Velikovsky published Worlds in Collision around 1950. It was preceded by Ages in Chaos and
followed by Earth in Upheaval, along with several others. The book was pronounced as a heresy by many
scientists and evolutionists, but none of its contents has been refuted.
The
premise of Worlds in Collision is that something caused a rupture in the
planet Jupiter that exploded outward and flew through the solar system as a
comet. This comet coalesced and
eventually became the planet, Venus after wreaking havoc on planet earth during
its comet period.
When
it was still a comet and orbiting the sun in a comet-like orbit, this mass came
near the Earth on at least two occasions.
It also disrupted the orbit of Mars causing it to wobble around in the
solar system and it also approached the earth causing upheaval and havoc.
In
its comet state, in addition to a tail, Venus had two illuminated portions of
its coma projecting from its mass that appeared to be the horns of a bull or
cow. Thus was introduced the world’s cow
cult.
Velikovsky
maintains, by many written past accounts, that several places around the world
had a cow cult. Most areas have overcome
their mythic past, although the bovine accounts are still available in their
ancient writings. India and surrounding
areas continue to maintain cow worship and this only occurred after the Venus
event. Prior to that event cows were
used as food in India, but suddenly they became holy and venerated and anyone
killing or injuring a cow was given the death penalty.
When
the nation of Israel split into the nations of northern Israel and southern
Judah, the nation of Israel began worshipping a golden calf as they did at Mt.
Sinai. Both Israel and Judah became
involved with Baal or Horus worship where they sacrificed babies to a god
resembling a bull or male cow.
Velikovsky
maintains that all the Egyptian plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, the
pillars of smoke and fire were caused by the passing of the comet Venus. Does that mean the hand of God was not
involved? Perhaps for him, but I
maintain that the Lord God is omniscient and omnipotent and all the events were
planned and predestined to occur just as written.
Various
Velikovsky Excerts
When Venus had a coma, the horns of its crescent must
have been extended by the illuminated portions of the coma. It thus had two
long appendages and looked like a bull’s head.
The golden calf worshiped by Aaron and the people at
the foot of Sinai was the image of the star.
The long horns of Venus could have been seen without
the aid of a telescopic lens. The horns were the illuminated portions of the
coma of Venus, which stretched toward the earth.
The Greek authors described the birth of Athene
(planet Venus), saying she sprang from the head of Jupiter.
it has been shown it was Venus which, at an interval
of fifty-two years, caused two cosmic catastrophes in the fifteenth century before
the present era.
Baal of the Canaanites and of the Northern Kingdom of
Israel was worshiped in Dan, the city of the cult of the calf.
In
the Vedas the planet Venus is compared to a bull: “As a bull thou hurlest thy fire upon earth
and heaven.”
The
“queen of heaven,” referred to repeatedly by Jeremiah, was Venus. The women of
Jerusalem made cakes for the queen of heaven and worshiped her from the roofs
of their houses.
The
comet Venus, of which it is said that “horns grew out of her head,” or Astarte
of the horns, “Venus cornuta”, looked like the head of a horned animal; and
since it moved the earth out of its place, like a bull with its horns, the planet
Venus was pictured as a bull.
Isis,
the planet Venus, was represented as a human figure with two horns, like
Astarte (Ishtar) of the horns; and sometimes it was fashioned in the likeness
of a cow. In time, Ishtar changed from male to female, and in many places
worship of the bull changed to worship of the cow.
Lucifer
Isaiah 14:12 NET
Look how you have fallen from the sky, O shining one (Lucifer KJV), son of the
dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, O conqueror of the nations!
Velikovsky: Cicero wrote: “Venus, called in Greek
‘Phosphorus’ and in Latin ‘Lucifer’ when it preceded the sun.”
Within
my various collected translations, the word “Lucifer” only appears in the KJV
and the LXX. The word “Lucifer” is the
Latin word for Venus or morning star. It
was been used in the past few hundred years as another name for Satan, but that
is incorrect. Yes, Isaiah is correct to
say that Venus was cut down to the ground and historically, during its
beginning as a comet it conquered and destroyed many nations.
In
this Isaiah 14 section the King of Babylon is being discussed. If it is referring to the ancient King (not
Nimrod) then Balshazzar was cut down. If
it is referring to the current Mystery Babylon, it will only be a matter of
time until the Rothschild central banking system, including the Federal
Reserve, will be cut down.
Amos 5:25-26 NET You
did not bring me sacrifices and grain offerings during the forty years you
spent in the wilderness, family of Israel. (26) You will pick up your images of
Sikkuth, your king, and Kiyyun, your star god, which you made
for yourselves,
This
passage from Amos is directed toward the northern nation of Israel prior to
their destruction and deportation by Assyria.
The
Hebrew term (sikkut) apparently refers to Sakkuth, a Mesopotamian star god
(another name for a Venus-type god) identified with Ninurta in an Ugaritic god
list.
“Your
King” is translated as Molech (the bull god) in the LXX.
The Hebrew term (kiyyun)
apparently refers to the Mesopotamian god Kayamanu, or Saturn.
“Your
star god” – speaks for itself i.e. the golden calf.
