The Church In The Wilderness

THE CHURCH IN THE WILDERNESS

12-14-2016

It has previously been written, in a past article, that the woman who fled to the wilderness, in Revelation 12, is the same woman in the wilderness sitting on the scarlet beast in Revelation 17.  Women in the Wilderness

Revelation 12:14 NET  But the woman was given the two wings of a giant eagle so that she could fly out into the wilderness, to the place God prepared for her, where she is taken care of — away from the presence of the serpent — for a time, times, and half a time.

Revelation 12:17 NET  So the dragon became enraged at the woman and went away to make war on the rest of her children, those who keep God's commandments and hold to the testimony about Jesus.

Considering the decision of the dragon to go and make war on her children i.e. those who keep God's commandments and hold to the testimony about Jesus, there is a high probability the woman is the Church.  For somewhat over a thousand years after Revelation was drafted, the Church was primarily the Roman Church.

The early Church around Jerusalem came under great tribulation from the Temple leaders and were scattered around the Middle East and Southeast Europe beginning their time in the wilderness.  When prominence was vested in the church after it became a legal religion, power increased within the Roman seat and also later in the Eastern seat in Constantinople.  Eventually, all religious power rested within the Roman Church structure for all of Europe, Northern Africa, and many of the Eastern areas.

The First Wilderness Wandering

The Israelites had the Passover faith to pack up their belongings and leave Egypt under the leadership of Moses.  When they arrived at Sinai, God appeared to Moses as a flame or a fire with thunders and lightning.  Later, after Moses met with God on several occasions, the congregation was asked to listen to the voice of God as He desired to give them the laws and commandments.

At the sight and sound of the smoke, thundering, and lightning, the people were fearful and refused to allow God to appear and speak in their presence.  Their decision was for Moses to go up the mountain, listen to the words of God, and then repeat the information to them.  During Moses’ trip to listen to God on Sinai, the congregation molded a golden calf, which resulted in idolatry worship.

For some reason the Israelites lost the faith that took them out of Egypt.  From this point onward their lack of faith in the power of God continued in various ways and became a disaster for all the people except Caleb and Joshua.  The story spoken by ten of the twelve spies exploring the land spoke of giant men and the people became fearful and refused to enter the land.  As a result God assigned the congregation to wander in the wilderness for a total of forty years until all adults died except of course for Joshua and Caleb.

Exodus 20:18-21 NET  All the people were seeing the thundering and the lightning, and heard the sound of the horn, and saw the mountain smoking — and when the people saw it they trembled with fear and kept their distance.

(19)  They said to Moses, "You speak to us and we will listen, but do not let God speak with us, lest we die."

(20)  Moses said to the people, "Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you so that you do not sin."  (21)  The people kept their distance, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.

The Church in the Wilderness

Similar to the Israelites at Sinai, the Church people did not listen to God.  The major cause of this inability to listen to God was due to the Roman Church denying access to the Bible.  The Bible chained to the front of the Cathedral was written in Latin that no one could read except for the priests.  All vernacular translations of the scriptures were forbidden and only approved hints of the substance of the Bible were given only by the priests.  The result was similar to the “fake news” debacle occurring within the USA today.  Whatever the Roman Church reported as “Christian” was readily accepted by the majority as truth.

Israel’s lack of faith caused them to worship the golden calf shortly after failing to hear God for themselves. In fact, their shortage of faith during their entire wilderness wandering meant that most were led by the flesh, rather than by the Spirit. The flesh is always an inner “harlot” that leads us to worship the golden calf in some manner. On a corporate scale (including Protestant groups), the church has had the same problem throughout the entire church age.  The seven letters to the seven churches, at the beginning of the Revelation addresses the lack of faith mentality of the churches, from the beginning to the present.

Martin Luther posted his 95 thesis in 1517.  He translated the New Testament from Greek to a vernacular German in 1522 and the complete Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments in 1534.  The printing press was also developed during the same time period (brought to Eastern Europe by the Mongol invasion) which greatly aided the distribution of the Bible, which people could read for themselves in their own language for the first time since the initiation of the Roman Church.

Israel, prior to the division after the death of Solomon, brought forth David (with the assistance of God).  Although David greatly sinned with the Bathsheba affair (he later repented) he ruled Israel as a follower of God and His laws.  After the division, northern Israel was termed a harlot by Hosea.  Later, southern Judah was cast out for their idol worshipping harlotry and placed under the rule of Babylon, Persia, Greece, and finally Rome.  Afterwards, the majority of the Church have been disqualified from ruling the coming Kingdom of God due to their idolatry and lack of faith concerning the true workings of God.

In the days of Elijah, God said that only 7000 souls have not disqualified themselves by worshipping Baal.  In like manner, according to God through Paul, there is currently only a remnant that is free of the harlotry of idolatry.  This remnant, sometimes called the elect or the overcomers are the ones truly chosen to participate as leaders during the Kingdom of God.

Romans 11:4-5 KJV  But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.  (5)  Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

In the Days of Noah

Immediately prior to the flood, Noah and his family entered the ark and the flood took them away.  In like manner, the return of Jesus will envision some taken away and others will be left.

Matthew 24:38-40 KJV  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,  (39)  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.  (40)  Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

There are several interpretations for this passage and the majority of them are in error.  “They were eating and drinking, etc.” refers to the general population.  Noah and his family entered the ark during this event or time.  No one knew about the nature of rain or vast amounts of water coming forth from the ground, including Noah and his family.  Thus when the flood came, even though Noah was unaware of the process, the water took them away as they were aboard the ark.  The general population outside the ark, most likely knew much more about the origin of the water than Noah since they were watching it happen.

One so-called seer teaches that the people taken away in verse 40 are taken to hell.  Although a fiery hell of eternal punishment does not exist, it could mean they are terminated and sent to the grave which is the actual meaning of hell and Hades.  However, both scenarios are false.  Salvation, Hell, & Resurrection

The ones taken in verse 40 are the elect, the overcomers, or the remnant.  The popular explanatory word is the Latin translation of “rapture”.  Before they are taken, the remnant of the days of Elijah plus many other deceased elect will be caught up first and then the living overcomers will join them.

Only the Chosen Remnant

ONLY THE CHOSEN REMNANT

Isaiah 10:20-22 NET  At that time those left in Israel, those who remain of the family of Jacob, will no longer rely on a foreign leader that abuses them. Instead they will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.  (21)  A remnant will come back, a remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.  (22)  For though your people, Israel, are as numerous as the sand on the seashore, only a remnant will come back. Destruction has been decreed; just punishment is about to engulf you.

Isaiah
The book of Isaiah contains an abundance of material on many future subjects such as:  the coming Messiah; the Millennium kingdom; the wrath of God; and the return of a remnant.  This future material is generally mixed within designated chapters with short term prophecies regarding:  the invasion of Assyria to northern Israel and later to southern Judah; and the coming invasion of Babylon to Judah.  Occasional it is debated if a particular section of scripture concerns a near term prophecy or a far term prophecy regarding the end-times.

The Remnant
The Isaiah 10:20-22 scripture above is placed after an Assyrian confrontation prophecy which appears to be immediately followed by an end-times wrath of God prophecy just prior to the prophecy scripture presented above.  For all practical purposes, no remnant returned to Israel after the Assyrian conquest.  The population was either destroyed or taken as exile captives.  Isaiah lived to see the captivity of the nation of Israel, when the Assyrians destroyed Samaria and carried the ten tribes into exile up near the Caspian Sea.  This prophecy of a returning remnant may have given hope to some of Israel. It spoke of a future time when the return of Israel would occur, and the prophet Isaiah tells us specifically that only a remnant would return.  Of course, we now know the remnant will be ancestors far removed from the original captives and they will be subjects of the Kingdom of God.  Although the “sand on the seashore” represents an innumerable amount of people, it is a sad state that only a small remnant will return.  Disobedience and the lack of faith in God appears to be the constant story of the people of the earth.

An historical period when the people of Israel “will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel” has not occurred to my knowledge.  This spiritual event will only begin in the Millennium.  Isaiah writes the nation will be destroyed with “complete destruction, one that is decreed”.  Although the population of Israelites will be “as numerous as the sand on the seashore” only a remnant will return.  The “sand on the seashore” quote can be sound in Genesis 32:12 is a promise to Abraham and ultimately represents all believers who kneel to the King of the Kingdom.

But you said, 'I will certainly make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand on the seashore, too numerous to count".  (Genesis 32:12 NET)

The current population of Jews is large but perhaps not quite as large as the sand of a seashore.  However, concerning the Jews “only a remnant within them will return.” This remnant will be a small portion of the current population, which is verified by Isaiah. These are the ones who will receive the promise of God (and I should add - the promise through Jesus Christ). The Apostle Paul understood and verified this when he wrote in Romans 9:27, “And Isaiah cries out on behalf of Israel, "Though the number of the children of Israel are as the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved” (NET).

Other Isaiah scriptures speak of a returning remnant.  Isaiah 11:11-12 is noticeable in that it mentions the four corners of the earth.  The preceding material of this chapter is definitely Millennial in nature.

At that time the sovereign master will again lift his hand to reclaim the remnant of his people from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and the seacoasts. He will lift a signal flag for the nations; he will gather Israel's dispersed people and assemble Judah's scattered people from the four corners of the earth.  (Isaiah 11:11-12 NET)

Prophets Speak of a Remnant
Other Old Testament prophets also speak of a returning remnant.  Joel 2:32 occurs immediately after a passage concerning the wrath of God as does the Obadiah 1:17 passage.  Zechariah 8:11-12 concerns a Millennial peace.

It will so happen that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be delivered. For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who survive, just as the LORD has promised; the remnant will be those whom the LORD will call.   (Joel 2:32 NET)

But on Mount Zion there will be a remnant of those who escape, and it will be a holy place once again. The descendants of Jacob will conquer those who had conquered them.  (Obadiah 1:17 NET)

But I will be different now to this remnant of my people from the way I was in those days,'says the LORD who rules over all, 'for there will be a peaceful time of sowing, the vine will produce its fruit and the ground its yield, and the skies will rain down dew. Then I will allow the remnant of my people to possess all these things.   (Zechariah 8:11-12 NET)

Will the idea of a “remnant” of believers be a novel construct after the wrath of God and the beginning of the Millennium?  Paul speaks of Elijah the prophet exclaiming, "Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars; I alone am left and they are seeking my life!"  Paul continues with, “But what was the divine response to him?  "I have kept for myself seven thousand people who have not bent the knee to Baal." So in the same way at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.  (Romans 11:3-5 NET)  There has always just been a remnant of believers, and as written by Paul, there is currently a “remnant chosen by grace”.

Dr. Stephen Jones – God’s Kingdom Ministries:  Paul reminded his readers, and all of us today, that during the days of Elijah only a remnant of 7,000 remained faithful from several million Israelites which are referred to as those chosen by grace.

In other words, there is no justification to say that all Israelites are chosen. Neither are all Israelites part of the remnant. Only the remnant is chosen according to God’s election. An unbelieving Israelite has no right to call himself one of God’s chosen people. His genealogy has nothing to do with it. His faith is the evidence that he is chosen.

Christian Zionism today is based on the faulty belief that Jews who have no faith in Jesus Christ are yet “God’s chosen people.” Some contend that as long as they have faith in God, it is sufficient, even if they reject Jesus Christ. Nothing can be farther from the truth, for Jesus is the God of the Old Testament. Furthermore, 1 John 2:23 tells us, “Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also”.

No Jew who denies Jesus as the Christ “has the Father.” This was not written by an anti-Semite. It was written by the apostle John by inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The idea that Jews can be saved apart from faith in Jesus Christ is one of the more recent heresies being popularized by some popular Christian Zionists.

Do Jews Need Christ?
God has not rejected the Israelites.  Actually God has not rejected anyone.  The nation of Israel refused to submit to the righteousness of Jesus, just as religious, self-righteous people refuse to submit today.  Paul used himself as an example, but does that mean submitting to Jesus is the only route to salvation?  From a New Covenant perspective the question must be answered as “yes”.  Does that mean repentance and submission to God the Father no longer is valid as some current Jews consider?  Again, from a New Covenant perspective the answer would be “yes” again.

So I ask, God has not rejected his people, has he? Absolutely not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
(Romans 11:1 NET)

Some may argue that true repentance and submission to God the Father under the Old Covenant may actually be valid for the Jews of today.  That thought appears to contradict New Testament scripture, but who knows the mind of God and who speaks for God?  No one that I am aware of.

True Israelites: Part 2

 True Israelites: Part 2

Other References and Concepts
Many theologians maintain the conclusion that the ten tribes of northern Israel were not officially brought back to the land of Canaan by God, although, there were apparently several individuals who did return.  A small group of Judahites were brought back from Babylon to prepare the way for the birth of the Messiah.  Many chose to remain in the Babylonian kingdom.  Their majority refusal to accept Jesus, the Messiah, resulted in the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD and again in 135 AD.  This was prophesied by Jesus and could be the result of their refusal.  It is said, after the destruction of Jerusalem, the Judeans mostly migrated to Egypt and then to Spain becoming known as the Sephardim Jews.

According to Paul and Isaiah, the Judeans of Jesus’ day were given a hardened heart and they refused to accept Jesus as the Messiah or the Kingdom of God.  Currently, whether the so-called Jews are Judeans, Edomites, or Khazars is not important in the broad scheme of prophecy.  They consider themselves ancestors of the Judeans, and, as such, they continue to live under the curse of God as written in Deuteronomy 29:4 and Isaiah 6:9-10 as quoted by Paul in Romans 11:8-10.

As it is written, "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, to this very day." And David says, "Let their table become a snare and trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them; let their eyes be darkened so that they may not see, and make their backs bend continually."   (Romans 11:8-10 NET)

Paul’s Old Testament scripture quotes found in Romans 11:8-10 are given below.  The LXX version is used since I believe that is the one he was quoting from.

Yet the Lord God has not given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, until this day.   (Deuteronomy 29:4 Brenton)

Ye shall hear indeed, but ye shall not understand; and ye shall see indeed, but ye shall not perceive. For the heart of this people has become gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.   (Isaiah 6:9-10 Brenton)

After revealing their curse of the hardened heart, Paul relates the Judean’s fall is not necessarily permanent but can be revoked by faith in Jesus, which of course is absolutely true.  Their hardness or stumble (which was prophetic) permitted salvation to be provided to the Gentiles (the actual definition is:  people of the nations).

I ask then, they did not stumble into an irrevocable fall, did they? Absolutely not! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make Israel jealous.   (Romans 11:11 NET)

A few Jews or Judeans have accepted Jesus as the true Messiah, but the actual test of truth and faith will most likely occur during the 70th week of Daniel.

Just as you were formerly disobedient to God, but have now received mercy due to their disobedience, so they too have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy.   (Romans 11:30-31 NET)

It is my opinion the current nation of Israel is actually a revived nation of Judah to some extent.  It doesn’t appear possible any sizable group of the ten tribes of Israel ever returned after so many hundreds of years although opinions vary widely.

Peter Goodgame and the New Exodus
Researching for more Israelite information led me to reexamine a paper by Peter Goodgame found at https://redmoonhawaii.wordpress.com/2014/04/12/the-israel-of-god-and-the-end-of-rmr/ .  Below is Mr. Goodgame’s introduction to the article discussing “The Israel of God”.

Lately I have been continuing in my study of the New Exodus theme as it relates to end-times prophecy, and it seems that everything revolves around the complicated questions regarding the identity of “Israel.”  After Jesus died and rose again, and began to gather into Himself all those who believe in Him, what became of the definition of “Israel”? Did it remain the same, or did it change to include Gentiles? If it changed then how does the new definition of “Israel” relate to the many Old Testament passages predicting a gathering of “Israel” back to Jerusalem?

The primary focus of his topic revolves around the identity of “Israel”.  The exegete, Doug Kreiger, (discussed above) would be opposed to any theory or commentary portraying that anyone is an Israelite other than the Jews of today.  He rejects the concept that a Christian could be Biblically called an Israelite.  However, Mr. Goodgame, gives several scriptural proofs supporting the idea that perhaps Gentiles (non-Jews to a Jew) are also included in the class of “the Israel of God”.  Three of his ideas are listed below.

#1 The Judean leaders consisting of scribes and Pharisees, rejected the Personhood and authority of Jesus as the Messiah and therefore they rejected the integrity of the Torah.  Jesus categorically stated the scriptures testify Him.  If the Torah testifies about Jesus and Judeans reject Him then all non-Christian Jews apparently reject the Torah as well.  The acceptance of the teaching and authority of the Torah is to accept the Person the Torah testifies about.
.
You study the scriptures thoroughly because you think in them you possess eternal life, and it is these same scriptures that testify about me, but you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.  (John 5:39-40 NET)

#2  In the letters to the churches of Smyrna and Philadelphia Jesus refers to “those who say they are Jews and are not”.  To the Smyrna church Jesus said the ones claiming to be Jews was an act of blasphemy and to the Philadelphia church the ones claiming to be Jews were telling a lie.  Without attempting to put thoughts into Mr. Goodgame’s head, it appears that he is stating there are no such thing as a non-Christ Jew. Anyone claiming to be a Jew after the teaching, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ is committing blasphemy and telling a lie.

Ioudaios    ee-oo-dah'-yos    From G2448 (in the sense of G2455 as a country); udaean, that is, belonging to Jehudah: - Jew (-ess), of Juda.

Peter Goodgame:  These are incredible statements for Jesus to make, especially when compared to today’s popular end-times teaching that declares that the unbelieving genetic/cultural descendants of the ethnic Israelites that rejected Jesus –those who populate the modern-day state of Israel– are “the apple of God’s eye.”

#3  Zechariah 2:7-13 has several interesting facets.  Verse 7 tells people to escape to Zion if one dwells with the daughter of Babylon (mystery Babylon perhaps?).  This is considered to be a new exodus phrase concerning all nations according to Mr. Goodgame (that is, a journey of believers to the Lord in Zion).  Verse 8 contains the “apple of His eye” phrase.  Verse 9 declares that the people will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me with verse 10 stating the Lord will dwell in the midst of His people.  However, verse 11 claims that many nations will come to the Lord and will be His people. Mr. Goodgame uses this scripture as evidence that all New Covenant people are the apple or pupil of God’s eye.  I used the LXX version below.  It is basically identical to KJV but with some interesting word translation.

Zechariah 2:7-12 Brenton  (7)  even to Sion: deliver yourselves, ye that dwell  with the daughter of Babylon.  (8)  For thus saith the Lord Almighty; After the glory has he sent me to the nations that spoiled you: for he that touches you is as one that touches the apple of his eye.  (9)  For, behold, I bring my hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to them that serve them: and ye shall know that the Lord Almighty has sent me.  (10)  Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Sion: for, behold, I come, and will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord.  (11)  And many nations shall flee for refuge to the Lord in that day, and they shall be for a people to him, and they shall dwell in the midst of thee: and thou shalt know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to thee.  (12)  And the Lord shall inherit Juda his portion in the holy land, and he will yet choose Jerusalem.

The “apple of God’s eye” appears to be many nations – not reserved for just Israel.

[NOTE:  If the daughter of Babylon is related to mystery, Babylon, then the daughter could be any area other than exclusively the USA because this passage would certainly not be warning only Americans to flee to Zion.]

Conclusion and Opinion
If the Jews are the descendants of Israel (Jacob) or at least descendants of the Old Testament nation of Judah then it would be fair to say they are the Israelites by genealogy and not the Church.  Mr. Goodgame (and others) appear to suggest that spiritually (not genetically) the term “of Israel” or the “Israel of God” was applied to the first believers who were Judeans and then encompassed the Gentiles (non-Jews) by Jesus, because of the remarkable faith of the Centurion, healed his servant and stated, “many around the world will share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven (God) but the sons of the kingdom who were supposed to dine at the banquet will be placed into obscurity (outer darkness).

I tell you, many will come from the east and west to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, but the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."   (Matthew 8:11-12 NET)

They may or may not be Khazars as postulated by Arthur Koestler in his book, The Thirteenth Tribe and others along the way.  Unless major unknown events occur in the near future, the Jews of today will be the Israelites (real or not) affected by the beast (antichrist) and events preceding and during the 70th week of Daniel.  Of course, they may be responsible, through their perceived instigation of a one-world government initiative, for bringing this worldwide wrath of God on themselves and the rest of mankind.

It could also be possible that only a remnant of the Israelites (descendants of Jacob) or the Old Testament nation of Judah will be saved and qualify as the chosen people and the apple of God’s eye.  This concept would be in agreement with Elijah and the Jews of Paul’s day as stated in Romans 11:5-7.  If only a percentage of the Gentiles (nations) will inherit salvation, it would be logical to claim that a percentage of the Israelites will receive salvation.

[The following is merely a thought – not theology]  It may be possible that God will resurrect the majority of mankind for the Millennium to offer them a change to make an informed decision.  The 20th and 21st chapters of the Revelation could appear to indicate this, although I will not claim it does.

Now when the thousand years are finished, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to bring them together for the battle. They are as numerous as the grains of sand in the sea.  (Revelation 20:7-8 NET)

1905 A.D. Russian pogroms continue. Also in Morocco, Ukraine, 300 dead.
1919 A.D. 3000 Jews killed in Hungarian pogroms.

Based on the above list, it appears the Judeans or Jews had a difficult situation wherever they happened to migrate.  It could be due to their religion, however, it is also highly likely the European world has always had a large population with little or no religion including atheists, agnostics, and other types.  It may be the result of their constant banking system and other property controlling schemes.  It appears that some of them are their own worst enemy.  The OT nation of Judah was taken captive to Babylon for 70 years – one year for each Sabbatical year they did not honor.  Sabbaticals are not honored by the Jews today, or anyone else for that matter.
